Sierra Nevada lies in Andalucía, 32km from the ancient
Moorish city of Granada, & offers mainland Europe’s most
southerly skiing. On the motorway from Málaga it takes
just 1hr to reach Granada & 1hr 40mins from Marbella.
Following the mountain road, a good road which meanders
uphill, it takes just a further 30 minutes to reach the
purpose-built village of Pradollano at 2,100m. It's
close enough to take a skiing day trip from Marbella & there
are some very good hotels if you feel like staying a little
longer, the best being the 'Sol y Nieve'.
The village is a little short on alpine charm & because of
its proximity to Granada & the Costa del Sol it gets
very busy at the weekends & on public holidays. The
ski area is not extensive but the skiing is varied & there
are plenty of easy runs, see
Piste
Map. The slopes are extremely well looked after & they
have plenty of snow machines & at busy periods Piste Police!
The slopes are high & above the tree line, being at the top
3470m, so when the conditions are good the skiing can be
excellent & the views striking; on a clear day you can even
see Morocco. It's quite a unique experience to be
skiing & yet be able to see the sea!
Sierra Nevada possesses a stunning & peaceful landscape set
against snow-capped mountains & so it is a region that is
also very popular with walkers, mountain bikers &
horse-riders. The rolling hills & deep valleys provide
many varied trails, perfect for all year round holidays.
Although it may not be the most obvious outpost of Tibetan
Buddhism you can also find a thriving retreat
centre, "O
Sel Ling"
opened
20 years ago by the Dalai Lama. For more info click on
